DIY Tiling: Possible with Patience

Tools

• Tile cutter (manual or electric)
• Notched trowel (6mm, 8mm, 10mm)
• Spirit level (at least 60 cm)
• Rubber mallet
• Spacers (2mm, 3mm, 5mm)
• Sponge, bucket, grout float
• Measuring tape and marker

Materials

• Tiles (10% extra for cuts)
• C1/C2 class flexible cement adhesive
• Coloured grout
• Primer for absorbent surfaces
• Silicone for wet corners

Step 1: Surface Prep

Surface must be clean, dry and sound. Over existing tiles, roughen and apply a special primer. Always prime plaster walls.

Step 2: Planning

Draw a centre line from the middle of the room. Symmetrical half-cuts at the edges matter visually.

Step 3: Mix the Adhesive

Follow the bag ratio. Too wet it slips, too dry it won't spread. Mix with a drill, rest 5 minutes, remix.

Step 4: Application

4. Level with rubber mallet

Step 5: Cuts

Measure carefully around corners, sockets and pipes. Use snips for small cuts, electric cutter for large ones. Smooth edges with sandpaper.

Step 6: Grouting

After 24 hours remove spacers. Apply grout diagonally with a rubber float. Sponge off excess after 15-20 minutes. Buff haze next day with dry cloth.

Step 7: Silicone

Apply silicone to wet corners. Smooth with a wet finger. Keep dry for 24 hours.
